The four steps
Open the profile
Find the public account in the Instagram app or on instagram.com.
Copy the profile link
Tap the three dots → Copy profile URL, or just type instagram.com/username yourself.

Why the picture looks so small in the app
Instagram displays profile photos inside a tiny circle and offers no zoom or save option. The uploaded file is still stored at a much larger square resolution, and that is the version fetched here — sharp enough to view properly on a full screen.
Getting it into your gallery
Android: the JPG lands in Internal storage → Download and the Gallery indexes it automatically.
iPhone: open Files → Downloads, tap the image, then share icon → Save Image.
If nothing loads
Private account: only public profiles can be fetched.
Typo in the username: check the spelling on the profile page.
No photo set: accounts using the default grey avatar have nothing to download.
